Sunday Afternoons in the Owens Valley, the kids take to the water in the summer. Since there are not oceans near, they are about 300 miles away, the local valley kids came up with their own wave makers. Actually they stumbled on the idea quite a few years back and it has been going on for at least 30 years as you mention the word "Flumming" and locals in the 40's and 50's say "oh yeah I remember doing that as a kid!" Come see the fun.... Imagination, innovation and just good old fashioned reasoning and you have your very own water world........... 

Preparing for a Flumming Adventure in the Owens River. It takes a body board, made from styrofoam, and in this case, it must have Spiderman on the board....

Lets go Flumming! 

Lets go Flumming with Durbin! Flumming is done on a part of the Owens Valley River, also known as the LA Aquaduct. This is a man made dam that serves as a cut off point to divert the water to other portions of the rivers main lines. 

They are standing on a small ledge which is just enough to give the time to thrust their bodies into the cold snow runoff....

The beginning of the Flumming, first you have to catch the wave by throwing yourself into the force of the current.  

Now he has the flume under his control. At this point he is swoshing....  

This is one of our veteran Flumming Idiots.  

This is what happens when the Flume gets the best of ya... 

The newest Flumming Idiot of the Owens Valley River, and to think he two weeks prior he was wearing a kilt and being a Groom.... What a neat guy....... 

It was his very first time Flumming and he stayed in the wave a long time. 

The great adventure of flumming, takes courage or some might say, a very creative mind....and guts...and bravery....or is that stupidity? 

And to think just a couple weeks ago, she was our petite bride, now she is a Flumming idiot.... Tehehehehhehehe... 

They make it look easy, but it really isn't. The really interesting part, they flume at night also,,, now that is a scary thought............. It is pitch black, with critters running wild in the open high desert and it is best to go though when there is a full moon.... Craziness, thats why.... "The freaks come out at night" oh wait thats a song... 

In order to Flume, your feet have to be in hyper kick mode, so that you can stay in the wave. The force of the water is stronger than you might think.. 

You have to get close to Flume talk......... 

Two can flume as well as one. Sometimes when the conditions are right, you can slam your flumming partner and then tuck and roll.... 

Thats what happens when the Flume wins..... 

It takes Spiderman to get you through the flumes.... 

Time to regroup and convince the next flummer it is time to jump in. 

Courage Son, Courage! 

Its cold cold cold water, runoff from the High Sierra mountains... Working up the courage to jump in, can take some time.......
